As the Dean of Admissions at East West College of the Healing Arts for many years, I have had about 3,400 people tell me their plans to work as a licensed massage therapist. I feel much invested in their successes and I’m so very proud of our alumni that I just have to share some of their stories of how they are healing our community.
Today I spoke to alumna Katie Boyts, who specializes in Thai and Tui Na massage and works in Portland, Oregon. She works with veterans and has also does public speaking about health and wellness. Katie is interested in exploring the relationship between bodywork and non-violence. Jenn Tellez attended one of her talks titled THE PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY OF PTSD AND THE HEALING VECTOR OF PEACEMAKING. The talk explored Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, our physiological reaction to trauma, and treatment implications in this context, all through the lens of the healing vector of peacemaking. Jenn will be working soon as a L.M.T. and mentioned to me that this lecture helped her understand how to develop a treatment plan that took in account the needs of someone with PTSD. If you are interested in this subject you can download a PDF of Katie’s paper at www.katieboyts.com.
