No one is a saint in the work place. Perhaps you talk behind the backs of coworkers now and then. Maybe you “forgetfully” let a couple of those pens from the office supple closet slip into your purse. Just like anywhere else, the workplace is full of tiny, but forgivable, little sins we are all guilty of. However, there is blurring the line of right and wrong and then there is kicking that line directly in the gut. Here are ten bad behaviors that could put you in jeopardy at work.
Blaming Others for Your Mistakes
No one wants to be in trouble, but tacking the blame onto a coworker is not only tacky but dangerous. Once the word is out around work that you are “one of those” your coworkers will flee you like rats from a burning ship. Than just see how well you get anything done.
Calling in Sick When You’re Not
Nothing wrong with calling a mental health day, but tap that wellspring too many times and someone will realize you’re either an invalid or a liar.
Going into Work When You Are Sick
Though you think you’re being a trooper, your constant hacking and wheezing will not make you a popular character around work. Besides being gross, your presence threatens to infect others, who will then have to do what you didn’t do and call in sick, flushing productivity down the toilet.
Playing the Gossip Hound
It might be nearly impossible to spread a little of this or that about your coworkers, but don’t become know as the office gossip. And more importantly, don’t spread hurtful rumors.
Abusing the Office Technology
Don’t print out 500 invitations to your baby shower on the work copier. Don’t make long distance calls to friends and family on your work phone all day. Don’t spend 3/4ths of your day watching You Tube. You know simple stuff.
Getting Too Comfortable
On the day of your interview you wore your best. Now months later you consider those stained old jeans dressing up for work. Every workplace has a certain level of dress required. Look at your coworkers and see what they are wearing and maybe dress slightly better than that. Chances are sweat pants won’t be in your future.
Stealing
If you take a pen, I won’t tell if you don’t. But a box of pens? Remember, stealing from your work is not only illegal, but an awfully embarrassing way to get fired.
Involving Coworkers in Your Personal Problems
It’s not their business, it’s distracting and unprofessional.
Hitting on Your Boss
My, my, my. How can that ever turn out well? Whether your boss accepts your advances or not, plan on finding a new job, which is going to be hard when you have to explain to your possible future employer that you left the last job for making time with your superiors.
Hitting on Fellow Employees
Same as above, but lacking the ambition.
