We are always reaching toward that carrot called “better.” We want to look better, be better at work, better in our relationships—the list goes on. Where we get confused is where we assume these “betters” will transform our insides to make us feel better. This outside-in approach is not only a lousy way to make yourself feel good, but it takes the power of wellness out of your own hands and places it into unpredictable, uncontrollable external factors. Time to turn the whole thing upside-down and start thinking about making yourself feel better inside first, and let all those other “betters” come flocking to you thereafter. Here are some tips to get you started.
· Don’t Wake Up Too Late or Too Early. Getting too much sleep can be just as draining as getting too little.
· Eat Breakfast. Getting that blood sugar and metabolism kick started first thing is central to keeping mood levels high.
· Mix It Up with Some Exercise. Sitting behind a desk all day can be very demoralizing. Come around the 2 o’ clock hour you can feel your brain slipping out your ear. Recharge the rest of your day by taking a quick dash to the gym. It doesn’t have to be long and strenuous, just enough to reboot your head. If the gym is out of the question, take a walk. A nice walk reminds you that you are more than your desk and your job and will help mentally clear you so you can attack your work when you get back.
· Make Small Goals and Keep Them. Sometimes where we go wrong is setting huge, amorphous goals that are not attained without completing thirty or forty smaller goals first. Concentrate on the smaller goals. That way you’ll feel less overwhelmed and less discouraged by the mountain you have to climb.
· Take a break from impressing others. You’ll save a ton of mental energy.
· At the end of the day, as you settle down into bed, think over what you’ve accomplished in the last twenty-four hours. Sometimes our lives feel like a continuous slog of days, each indistinguishable from the next. However, remember you evolve every day. If you think about your day every night, not only will you be able to separate out those moments that made just a bit of difference (exp: talked to someone you’ve never talked to before) but your mind will be trained to start doing more and more new things to ponder over at night.
